Animal rights high on my agenda
Sir, Kate Fowler of Animal Aid wrote (issue of March 19) regarding a lobby of Members of the European Parliament to improve the protection of primates in animal research.
I know from the many representations that I have received on this topic that it is an issue close to many people's hearts.
Euro-MPs have been at the forefront of a number of changes in the law to protect animals. Two years ago we banned the sale of cat and dog fur, which in some parts of Europe was being used for clothing, and labelled as "fake fur".
Only recently, MEPs voted on a proposal to ban the import and sale of seal products, which are often produced from animals that have been horrifically clubbed to death and skinned alive. Unfortunately not all my colleagues from other parties felt able to support that vote.
For anyone interested in animal welfare issues, it is another reason to take an interest in the European elections on June 4.
