In November 1987 a meeting was held between the late Councillor Douglas Axe and ex-teachers Mr. Norman Watson and Marion Broadhurst with a view to creating a local history group in Mexborough. It was decided that Norman Watson should be the Chairman and Marion the Secretary.

Then, following a few meetings the name of the society, settled upon was Mexborough & District Heritage Society it was also at this time that the Earl of Mexborough agreed to be patron. The rest, as they say, is history.

That was twenty-five years ago and from those early days we have come far. We have an extensive, and expanding, archive of both documents and photographs, to which more is most welcome. This is used for the benefit of anyone wishing to study the vast history of Mexborough and district. To enable everyone to do this we can be found in the Ref. Section of Mexborough Library every Friday where enquiries on both local and family history can be put to our members.

Talks also take place, these being held at 7.15p.m. on the last Tuesday of the month at the George and Dragon Public House, Church Street, Mexborough. Entrance fee £2 per person.

Newsletters are also written. These cover a different subject, on the history of Mexborough each month and are available, when attending talks, or from Mexborough Library at a cost of 30p. The society also runs a postal service, to enable those who live away, or cannot attend meetings for whatever reason, to obtain their monthly newsletter. The cost of which is £5 per year to include p & p.

Mexborough & District Heritage Society also has its own extensive website where: contact details can be found; a programme of events obtained; information found and enquiries answered by e-mailed. We can be reached by putting in: www.mexboroughheritage.co.uk
