DELIGHTED councillor Chris Mills could not stop smiling after being unveiled as Doncaster’s new civic mayor.
The Conisbrough and Denaby ward councillor, who has taken over the civic duties from Coun Eva Hughes, was handed her robe and chains at a special Mansion House ceremony.
The delighted 62-year-old revealed she will be supporting Firefly - an organisation that transports cancer patients to and from hospital appointments - and organ donation charity Live Life then Give Life which has helped prolong the life of her great niece Gabrysia Filarowski, now aged four, who had a heart defect as a baby.
Coun Mills was also congratulated in the ceremony on Friday by a group of pupils from Conisbrough’s Rowena Academy where she is chair of governors.
An overwhelmed and tearful Coun Mills, of Park Avenue, Conisbrough, said: “I really do feel extremely proud.
“It is an honour for the Conisbrough and Denaby ward too.
“I am really looking forward to this role. It will be a really busy year but one I am really looking forward to.”
Coun Eddie Dobbs, a Thorne ward councillor, was elected as deputy civic mayor.
