Haydn nets top US footy chance
A STUDENT has scored a dream scholarship to play football in America after a number of sides fought for his signature.
Tricky forward Haydn Cahill, 19, will star for Salem County in New Jersey after impressing coaches from across the pond during trials in London.
The Doncaster College student was picked out of thousands of hopefuls with scouts from top states such as California all vying to snap up the Skellow striker.
Haydn, who can also play as a winger, found out about the FirstpointUSA trials whilst studying for a BTEC sports performance and excellence qualification. He will fly out in August to study sports management and coaching on a contract that can last up to six years.
“I was overwhelmed and excited when I found out I had coaches wanting to sign me. I was told by phone who were interested,” said Haydn from Acacia Road.
“I didn’t just have one offer from the USA, I received five others which became very tough for me as they were from big states.
“I was in contact with each coach but whenever I received a phone call I nearly ignored it as I didn’t know the number.
“When I decided to answer and heard it was a coach wanting me to commit, I decided there on the spot that New Jersey was the place for me.
“I was told my determination and how motivated I was to win stood out. I am quiet in person but when it comes to football I like to be loud and recognised.
“Moving to America will be a killer, being away from all my friends and family for that long is going to be hard but has to be done otherwise my footballing ability will not get recognised.”
Late bloomer Haydn only discovered his natural talent for football aged ten and has played for Adwick and semi professionally for Nostell Miners Welfare Football Club in West Yorkshire and had trials at Shropshire’s Lilleshall and Leeds United.
