Food project to grow your own
Youngsters from the Denaby Diggers afterschool club are growing their own vegetables.
GREEN-fingered youngsters are growing their own food.
The eight to 16 year-olds called the Denaby Diggers go to a club run by the Craganour Tenants’ and Residents’ Association in Denaby.
The project, run by St Leger Homes – the organisation that manages council homes for Doncaster Council – is as a result of the organisation clinching £105,214 from the Local Food national programme.
There is also an adult group called the Craganour Croppers taking part in the St Leger Homes project.
Carol Higgins, St Leger Homes’ community development officer who is running the Doncaster project, said: “The Denaby sessions are going really well. Besides the young people’s project, we also have an adult gardening group, called the Craganour Croppers, learning about growing their own vegetables too.
“When the vegetables and herbs are ready for harvesting, we will then have a cook and eat session where everyone will learn how to cook healthily.”
Norma Foster, the volunteer ‘Growing Champion’ for the kids’ group and who assists the project in Denaby, said: “I have never had green fingers so this is a challenge for me but I’m being supported and shown what to do in the adult sessions and then I can help the kids who are really enjoying these sessions.”
