ALL the hard work by Wombwell High Street Committee paid off on Saturday, when hundreds of youngsters swarmed to town for the ‘big leet-up’ and festive fun.

Santa’s stock of presents even ran out at one point, as over 170 wrapped gifts proved not enough for eager young visitors who flocked to the grotto from 10am to 4.45pm to whisper their wishes.

Volunteers made the day affordable for cash-strapped families by charging just £2 entry. Santa’s grotto alone collected £352, while the tombola profits were £252 and flashers sold on the street made £121.

Committee member Andy Cole said: “It was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. We had Punch and Judy outside the grotto for people to watch while they were queueing, and there were plenty of police about, joining in the community fun. It was the best day we’d had for a while.”
