A hospital worker who went above and beyond the call of duty to help patients having kidney dialysis get home safely after treatment has won an award.

Trish Sykes, a clerk on the renal ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, has been named the first ever winner of the ‘Star of the Month’ award at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

She recognised that the transport service taking people home after dialysis could be unpredictable, with waits of up to three hours.

Trish set to work to organise and chase progress on transport for patients, and helped build a case for a dedicated service which has now been set up so that people who need transport home no longer have to wait.

“To say I was shocked is an understatement but I was thrilled to bits. To be acknowledged like this makes it all worthwhile and I greatly appreciate it,” she said.
