HE is only six years old - but he is one of the tidiest boys in Doncaster.

William Smith, from Scawthorpe is thought to be Doncaster’s youngest regular litter-picking volunteer since he started regularly helping his grandmother tidy up the streets.

Mayor of Doncaster Peter Davies, and his deputy and deputy Coun Cynthia Ransome, recently met William and his family to thank him for all his efforts.

William said: “It feels very nice to be Doncaster’s youngest litter picker. I started picking litter because I thought it was the right thing to do, Grandma says ‘find a bin and put it in!’”

Mr Davies said: “William is setting a fine example to other young people across the borough and it was a pleasure to meet such an inspirational young man.

“In an ideal world people would stop dropping litter in Doncaster, but until that happens I am really pleased that there are people like William and his Grandma to make sure that the rubbish ends up in the bin where it belongs.”

Coun Ransome: “With our Love Where You Live campaign we want to inspire everyone to make where we live, work and play the kind of place we really want it to be. William is a great example of how we can all do something, whoever we are, to make where we live a better place.”

During his visit to the new Civic Office, William was presented with a litterpicker, gloves and high visibility vest to help him to keep up the good work!
